Komphela: Wits strikers out-muscled us
11 February 2015
Maritzburg coach Steve Komphela says the inability to contain the Bidvest Wits marksmen was a big factor in the 2-1 loss on Tuesday.
The Team of Choice scored first when Mohamed Anas bagged his sixth goal of the campaign, but ended up 2-1 losers at the Harry Gwala Stadium after the Clever Boys hit back through goals from Thulani Hlatshwayo and Fikru Tefera.
It was the physical presences of Tefera and strike partner Henrico Botes that made it a difficult night for Maritzburg, believes Komphela.
"I think after scoring we looked like we will come through but the challenges that we were expecting was they were going to do a lot of crosses," Komphela said after the match.
"It did happen and the failure to deal with the first ball and second ball was a result but I think above all, the factor of two of their strikers of Botes and Fikru - they are burglars.
"They were fighting for every inch and the difference was that our defenders were allowing them to take charge to control them. And if you are playing with strikers who are hustlers and you are too soft you will definitely succumb to the pressure."
The Team of Choice are next in action when they take on Chippa United in PE on Saturday, a match that sees them up against former coach Ernst Middendorp.
