Relief for Komphela
12 March 2015

Maritzburg United coach Steve Komphela was able to breathe a huge sigh of relief after seeing his side getting back to winning ways with their 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday night.

A goal seven minutes from time by substitute Khumbulani Banda sealed the deal for the Team of Choice.

"If you exhaust all the means and ways of how not to win, the only option is to win and I think justice prevailed," Komphela said after the match.

"There is nothing as bad as when you find your house almost collapsing, when you know you had built a very strong foundation, but for whatever reasons you find that things are not working.

"It is about staying true to the cause, lots of patience and you have to be fearless - say things people don’t want to hear," he continued.

"When I said ‘if there is anything that has to happen to change things, even if it means I have to be a sacrificial lamb, so be it’, it was more like a shocking vow - it is a fact, in leadership there is an element of selflessness and that was evident today in the way the team performed, they put their bodies on the line.

"Stuart Baxter has done a tremendous job, unfortunately it had to happen, a team that is not used to losing has lost against a team that is not used to winning."
