Zulu: SuperSport game like a cup final
31 March 2015
As the Team of Choice chase a top eight finish to the season, the match aqainst SuperSport United on Saturday afternoon is of huge importance.
Only goal difference sees Maritzburg United above Matsatsantsa on the Absa Premiership table, and as winger-come-defender Philani Zulu points out, the match at the Harry Gwala Stadium is a must-win encounter.
“It’s going to be a tough match – SuperSport will be coming here for victory. Like us, they have 30 points, and are challenging for the top eight – so it’s like a final for us – win this game and we have better chance of making the top eight.
“They play very well as a team. So we will need to do the same – we’ll have to play with passion, work harder than them, and master our instructions and game-plan better than SuperSport do on the day,” he told maritzburgunited.co.za.
Zulu has become an important member of the side of late, putting in some stellar performances at left full-back since switching from his normally more advanced attacking role.
“Yes, its gone pretty well for me so far,” he said. “I don’t think it was something anybody was expecting, but compliments to the coaches for seeing that I had the potential to play in defence.
“I had played there a few times in my junior days, but only during training. It’s a tough position, with new responsibilities, and the coaches have been talking to me, giving me advise, and so playing to their instructions, I have done okay so far.
“I’m happy overall to be able to make a contribution to the team, and to have been able to help the side get out of the slump we had found ourselves in before we beat Kaizer Chiefs,’ he added.
