Vries: Learning all the time as captain
13 April 2015
Speaking ahead of the Black Aces game on Wednesday, Maritzburg United goalkeeper Virgil Vries reveals his approach to captaining the Team of Choice.
Vries will lead a refreshed Maritzburg side into battle with AmaZayoni at the Mbombela Stadium on Wednesday evening (19H30), the Pietermaritzburg side determined to get their top eight challenge back on track after a 1-0 loss to SuperSport United in their previous match brought to an end two consecutive wins.
“It was important to get some additional time to prepare after the loss to SuperSport. We used the time well to work on the negatives from that game, including our finishing as we failed to take our chances. We emphasized what we had done positive as well, and so we are determined to get our top eight spot back.
“We are well prepared for this game. We have seen Aces in action twice recently, against Sundowns in the league and cup, so we know well what we are up against.
“But we are also not looking to try and focus on Aces too much. We need to focus on what we can do, how we can play to our strengths, to go out there with belief and confidence,” said the Namibian Number One.
When asked about his thoughts on leading the Team of Choice, and his philosophies as a captain, Vries replied:
“I try to lead the team by being as positive as I can. Not only in words, but also in my actions, and I think I’m headed in the right direction because the players have responded well to me so far.
“I’m happy to captain the team – it’s an honour and a privilege to be the captain of a professional team. I have the support of the management, and I’m learning all the time – from the young players and from the experienced players, how to implement man-management. I’m taking things day by day, and I feel I’m growing all the time.”
