Komphela praise for goalkeepers

30 April 2015

Maritzburg United coach Steve Komphela is pleased to have quality goalkeepers such as Shu-aib Walters and Virgil Vries in his squad.

Walters put in a brilliant performance to help his team beat Ajax Cape Town 1-0 on Tuesday night in a game in which the Cape side had the better and more regular chances.

“Any three points at this stage are important, even if it was a smash and grab. To me, I would have accepted a draw. Deserved, but in inverted commas,” said Komphela on the game.

“Sometimes we perform well and don’t get the result,” he continued. “You don’t play that well, but you get a result, you still say it’s not working. There’s matches where we have performed unbelievably well and didn’t get anything.

“And testament to [the win over Ajax] is Shu-aib being Man of the Match. He put in a great performance, lots of one on ones.

“He is a top professional, he trains very well, and is very experienced. And so is Virgil – before Shu-aib was playing consistently, so was Virgil – there’s no distinction, no difference, and I’m happy that he came after a long time and performed well.”
