Vries stars for Namibia at Cosafa Cup
29 May 2015

Maritzburg United goalkeeper Virgil Vries has been on top form in the Cosafa Cup and has helped Namibia reach the final, where they will play Mozambique.

The final will take place in Rustenburg this Saturday evening.

Namibia started their tournament with a 0-0 draw against the Seychelles, with

Vries making two key saves in that game: one just before half time and with virtually the last kick of the game.

A brace from Benson Shilongo saw Vries and his team-mates through to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Mauritius.

Their final group match resulted in a 4-1 thrashing of Zimbabwe, with Golden Arrows forward Deon Hotto getting two of those goals, while Vries was beaten only via the penalty spot.

The quarter-finals saw Namibia beating Zambia 5-4 on penalties after the games had ended goal-less.

Again Vries made an outstanding contribution, with particularly brilliant saves just five minutes into the game and again in the dying minutes.

The Brave Warriors then went on to book their place in the final after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Madagascar on Thursday.

Shilongo again netted two goals as Namibia scored first before then going 2-1 down, only to hit back with a goal soon afterwards as the teams went into the break at 2-2. The winner came six minutes from time, thanks to a Peter Shalulile goal.
