The ABSA Premiership season 2014/15, will go down as a historic season for Maritzburg United, as we all know by now, we finished in the top eight position for the first time in the history of the club.

To many people, this comes as a surprise, which is understandable as the club has always finished in the bottom half of the table, the highest position being the 10th, until last season. It is also true that in many cases, it was a matter of fighting relegation which the club tasted once.

But the truth of the matter is that the Directors of the club implemented their strategy brilliantly. The three phases of the strategy were 1. Secure a Franchise in the PSL, which they did, then 2. Sustain the club in the PSL. This was always going to be the most difficult part without sponsorship, but the Chairman and his colleagues did a sterling job using their own financial resources.

To do this, you have to check the quality of coaches they brought to the Club, the likes of Trott Moloto, Ernst Middendorp, Gordon Igesund and Steve Komphela to count some.

The third phase, was now to grow the Maritzburg United brand on and off the field. To prove their seriousness, the Directors gave Komphela the mandate to finish in the top eight.

Season tickets were re- introduced, partnerships with various stakeholders were put in place, and the Msunduzi Municipality came on board. This proved to be a winning strategy because the results are there for all to see.

On weekday evening games, spectator numbers improved from average 3000, to 6500. The club sold more than 3500 season tickets and finished in the top eight. The goals set by the club were clearly SMART (Simple, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound).

As we commence with pre-season training, we are looking forward to a challenging season, having set the bar high and everybody at the club knows that the stakes are high. Whoever is the coach can be assured of full support from the Chairman, the Directors, Management and Staff, and will inherit a club with players who have a mentality chiselled do even better in the new season. With the type of support we enjoy from our spectators and fans, we have the confidence to do better.

As a matter of interest, last season’s stats that put us at position eight were as follows, we played 30 games, Won 10, Drew 10 and lost 10. We scored 30 goals, conceded 25 and the goal difference was 5, to make 30. It would seem 30 was our lucky number last season.
