THE THIRD ANNUAL NASHUA MARITZBURG UNITED SCOOLS SOCCER FESTIVAL IS SET TO COMMENCE THIS WEEK
30 June 2015
The third annual Nashua Maritzburg United Schools Soccer Festival was launched at the Nashua Offices in Pietermaritzburg last week.
The festival which was launched three seasons ago, is proudly sponsored by Nashua Pietermaritzburg and run by the Team of Choice.
It started off with only eight high school teams, and the number was doubled last season with 16 high schools taking part. Schools from different backgrounds participate in this festival. There are schools from the previously disadvantaged areas, some from the townships and others from the previously advantaged model C schools.
This season, 16 schools again are taking part, with one school coming from as far as Ixopo. At the launch, Nashua Director Sudashen Naidoo expressed their happiness in being the sponsors of the festival.
“We are excited with the project which continues to grow every season. It is our way of contributing to the holistic development of the youth,” he said.
Maritzburg United Caretaker Head Coach Mandla Ncikazi, who participated in the draw, commented that sport played a very vital role in keeping the youth away from trouble.
“A child in sport, is a child out of court” said the coach.
The teams are divided into four streams of four. They will play a Round Robin system and the two top teams in each group proceeds to the quarter finals. The festival will be played on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of July 2015 with the semi finals and the finals being played at Harry Gwala Stadium.
