The Nashua Maritzburg United Schools Soccer Festival 2015
9 July 2015

The popular annual schools festival kicked off with much anticipated enthusiasm that it has proved to generate over the past two years since the tournament (now referred to as the ' festival' ) was initiated.

Sponsored by Nashua Pietermaritzburg and run by PSL outfit Maritzburg United, the festival proved to have grown bigger and this year it attracted participation by schools from Vulindlela, the rural part of the Municipality, also meant that it was growing and attracting teams from different walks of life.

It kicked off on the 2nd of July with 16 schools participating at A.B Jackson fields, outside of Harry Gwala Stadium. The teams were divided into four groups of four teams and played a Round Robin, which saw two schools per Group qualifying for the Championship Section whilst the bottom two qualifying for the Plate Final.

The semi finals and finals were meant to be played at Harry Gwala Stadium on the 4th, but due to the rehabilitation of the pitch ahead of the new season, the finals were played at A.B Jackson fields.

The PLATE final which was introduced this year, was contested between Mehlokazulu High School, the two time winners of the Previous Tournament, and KwaPata High School. MehlokaZulu went on to win on penalties.

Last Years’s runners up, Sobantu High School, were up against debutants Edendale Technical High School. Once again Sobantu were the unlucky lot as they lost the Championship Final on penalties.

We congratulate the winners of this year’s festival, and encourage those that did not do well to come back stronger next year. Our grateful appreciation once again to Nashua Maritzburg for continuing to sponsor the event. We look forward to next year.
