United start MDC with a bang
6 September 2015
The Maritzburg United Reserve team put in an excellent performance in their opening Multichoice Diski Challenge match with a 3-1 win over Platinum Stars at the Makhulong Stadium last weekend.
Khumbulani Banda (pictured right), Menzi Chili and Bandile Shandu gifted the Team of Choice maximum points while Sipho Senne scored the face-saver for Dikwena.
With the weather being unkind to the fans that had come out to support the youngsters, Banda set the stadium alight as he rifled the ball past Dikwena keeper William Lowe from range in the 15th minute.
Dikwena were gifted a chance to draw level in the 26th minute but Sipho Sinne’s final touch inside the box was a disappointing one as he missed the target after being afforded acres of space inside the box.
Sandile Dlamini rounded the Dikwena keeper Lowe only to watch in agony as his effort was cleared off the line by defender Elias Rapairi in the 40th minute to keep the score at 1-0 going to the break.
In the second stanza, Dikwena got a good chance restore parity but Kamogelo Mathe's freekick was a terrible one as it troubled the spectators behind the goals instead of the Martizburg keeper Lindokuhle Mathebula.
On the hour mark, the 26-year-old Banda fluffed his chance for a double as he powered his freekick over the cross bar from the edge of the Dikwena box.
Against the run of play, man-of-the-match Menzi Chili sneaked behind the Dikwena defence to score Maritzburg’s second goal of the match in the 64th minute.
Four minutes later, Senne received the ball in the Dikwena half and cut through the Maritzburg defence like a hot knife through butter to pull one back for Stars in the 68th minute.
The goal ignited a sense of belief in Stars that they could pull a comeback only for Bandile Shandu to end their hopes with a fine solo effort to score the third goals for Maritzburg.
