Maritzburg 0-2 Bloem Celtic
12 September 2015
Things did not break Maritzburg United’s way on Saturday night as they lost 2-0 to Bloemfontein Celtic at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
It was Maritzburg who had the early chances in the game as Kurt Lentjies forced Patrick Tignyemb to save his shot from a tight angle after a storming run into the box, before Mokate mistimed a headed effort.
Lentjies then went wide from range before Helder Pelembe had Celtic's first real chance of the game, on 27 minutes, but he powered the shot wide.
Phunye Sele Sele took the lead on 40 minutes when Thapelo Morena skipped down the right and fired in low via a deflection.
The lead was doubled five minutes later when Nyatama found the net with a powerful downward headed finish from Mogapi's cross.
Maritzburg were unfortunate not to pull a goal back a few minutes after the restart when Mohammed Anas had his header cleared off the line by Vusi Ntanga.
Anas was then denied by Tignyemb from close range after the ball had deflected into his path midway through the second stanza.
At the other end of the field there was nearly a third for Celtic when Lyle Lakay nearly caught Virgil Vries off his line, before the Namibian recovered to make the save.
While the Team of Choice pressed hard for a goal and were the team on the front foot, chances faled to arrive as Celtic defended resolutely.
There was another late chance for the Free State side, but Vries did well to take the ball off Lerato Lamola’s feet.
Maritzburg starting XI: Vries, Teyise, De Jongh, Mngonyama, Mekoa M, Zulu, Mkhize, Lentjies, Cele, Shai, Mokate
