United back in business with TKO win!
2 October 2015

Maritzburg United earned their first win of the season as they overcame Jomo Cosmos 2-1 in a riveting game of Telkom Knockout football at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night.

The Team of Choice were the dominant side on the night and played some outstanding football, particularly in the first half.

The hosts looked positive from the outset as Clive Barker took charge for his first home match, the coach watching on as his team played some bright and entertaining football.

Kurt Lentjies was instrumental for Maritzburg and forced Cosmos goalkeeper Sherwin Naicker into parrying the ball away from goal on 20 minutes, Mohammed Anas though unable to profit on the rebound.

Ten minutes before the break a blistering counter attack from the KZN side saw Lentjies releasing Siyabulela Shai, who squared for Anas, but his shot was blocked by Frederic Nsabiyumva.

It was Shai who was to break the deadlock, a couple of minutes before half time when he received the ball in a central position 25-yards out before unleashing a rocket of a shot into the top corner.

Cosmos were down to ten men in the 44th minute after Thato Sithole was sent off for an over-the-top challenge on Shai.

Tawfeeq Salie made a brilliant stop to keep Charlton Mashumba from picking out the top corner after he had cut in from the right wing in a rare chance for Ezenkosi, five minutes after the restart.

United were given the chance to double their lead after John Paintsil's free kick was adjudged to have been handled by a Cosmos defender, allowing Lentjies to fire home a cool and clinical spot kick.

With 20 minutes to go it was nearly 3-0 as some superb football saw Ryan de Jongh with some fantastic wing play before the ball was squared to Shai, who played Anas in with a sublime pass, only for the Ghana striker to have his parting shot for the goal saved by Sipho Mngomezulu’s last-ditch tackle.

Cosmos were back in the game with 15 minutes to go when Cheslyn Jampies’ floated free kick eluded everyone. There were some anxious moments in the closing minutes of the game, but Maritzburg were able to hold on to book their place in the last eight.
