Match Preview: Orlando Pirates v Maritzburg United
23 October 2015
Maritzburg may be struggling in the league, but the Team of Choice are eyeing a place in the Telkom Knockout semi-finals when they take on Orlando Pirates this weekend.
The match takes place at the Orlando Stadium Soweto and is set for a 3pm kick off on Saturday.
Pirates booked their place in the last eight by beating AmaTuks, while Maritzburg beat Jomo Cosmos 2-1.
Both sides also go into the weekend’s game on the back of league defeats, Pirates having gone down to Bidvest Wits while the Team of Choice lost to Chippa United.
Head coach Clive Barker admits his team currently find themselves under pressure after a tough start to the season, saying he sees hard work and a positive attitude as the best solution.
“Nobody is going to do us any favours, we are going to have to fight this one through. [We can turn things around] by hard work, by planning for each game, by taking it one game at a time,” said Barker.
“Its [the Pirates match] going to be tough – we’re bottom of the league at the moment. It’s a tough ask, but let’s get hold of it and turn this bad situation into a good situation.
“In our situation, you grab a little bit from the cup, you grab a little bit from the league, but of course the priority is not to get relegated.”
United will be without Tawfeeq Salie after he suffered a groin injury against Chippa, with Virgil Vries set to start in goal.
“He was doing so well,” said Barker of Salie. “Magnificent and very brave to go in to the tackle. I thought he had been playing very nicely.”
Head to Head Stats
The two clubs have met 18 times before, with Pirates winning 11, Maritzburg five, and two draws. Last season saw United taking four points off Bucs in the league, a 2-1 win and a 1-1 draw.
