Last minute goal spoils it for Maritzburg
21 November 2015
Maritzburg United were heading for a win over Kaizer Chiefs until a 97th minute equaliser saw the Team of Choice having to settle for a 1-1 draw at a packed Harry Gwala Stadium.
The Team of Choice were 1-0 up for most of the game afterKurt Lentjies netted a penalty in the 20th minute, folowing a reckless handball in the box by Tsepo Masilela, who handled the ball in his after misjudging a cross.
United then did superbly to keep Chiefs at bay as the home side put bodies on the line to keep their lead in tact.
Goalkeeper Tawfeeq Salie had another fine game and made a stunning stop to keep Bernard Parker from curling the ball in at the far post 10 minutes after Lentjies had scored.
Clive Barker's side seemed to be destined for all three points, but had not counted on seven minutes of added time,
Reneilwe Letsholonyane picking up a loose ball in the 97th minute to slam a low drive past a helpless Salie at the near post.
Maritzburg remain in 16th place, though only on goal difference now, having drawn level on five points with University of Pretoria.
Unietd will only be in action again next month, with the Absa Premiership set for a break while the CAF Africa U-23 Cup of Nations is played in Senegal.
