SuperSport United 2-2 Maritzburg United
10 January 2016
With a bit more fortune, Maritzburg United could easily have walked off with all three points rather than a 2-2 draw with SuperSport United in Polokwane on Sunday.
The Team of Choice led the game twice, and also had a legitimate goal ruled out for off-sides, while SuperSport’s opening goal was a debatable one with regards as to whether the ball crossed the line.
Maritzburg dominated the first half in terms of goal scoring chances, and took the lead on eight minute when Mondli Cele got a feint touch onto a dangerous Kurt Lentjies free kick to beat Ronwen Williams at the near post.
United held on to their win until the 70th minute, when Clayton Daniels’ header was ruled to have crossed the line, although it looked as if Manti Mekoa may have cleared the ball off the goal-line.
Kwanda Mngonyama put Ernst Middendorp’s team back in front in the 75th minute when he picked up a clearance on the edge of a box, doing superbly to evade a tackle before arrowing an 18-yard shot into the bottom corner.
United were however not able to hold on to their lead as Jeremy Brockie powered in a back post header two minutes from time.
