Mandla’s moving tribute to Mondli

28 January 2016
Former Maritzburg United coach Mandla Ncikazi, who played a big role in bringing the late Mondli Cele from Port Shepstone to the PSL, paid a memorable tribute to United’s fallen hero.

Below are selected quotes from Ncikazi’s interview with Power987Sport:

"When Mondli was called up to Bafana provisional squad, it was our proudest moment because of his lack of early development."

"One of Mondli Cele's objectives this season was for him to make it into the Bafana Bafana squad.”

"Mondli was a sheep outside the field and was a lion on the field, very humble.”

"When we looked at the stats,he had the most assists and most goals and its amazing cos it was his first season.”

"I remember his first game, he won a penalty against Sundowns and in his second game his cross led to the goal and we beat Pirates.”

"Mondli had the ability to score, to take on defenders, aggressive, short but good in the air and he never disappointed us.”

"At 24 Mondli hadn't played professional football but we took a chance with Steve Komphela because of the attributes we saw.”
