More heartbreak for United

06 February 2016

Maritzburg fought to come back from two goals down to level the game at 2-2, only to concede an added time goal against Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium on Saturday night.

Chiefs took an early lead, Willard Katsande netting for the hosts from the penalty spot after only five minutes, keeper Glenn Verbauwhede having brought down Camildine Abraw in the box.

The Team of Choice fought their way back in to the game, Kurt Lentjies having a few efforts on goal, but against the run of play, AmaKhosi scored in the 37th minute when Abraw nodded in a header from George Lebese's cross.

United were back in business in the 42nd minute when Thamsanqa Teyisa headed in from Deolin Mekoa's cross.

It was 2-2 four minutes after the break as Evans Rusike found the net, finishing well after a mistake in the Chiefs defence.

There were then chances at both ends, with Amakhosi keeper Pieterse making a double save in the 77th minute to keep out Lentjies and Philani Zulu.

But the hosts struck a deadly late blow, Lorenzo Gordinho heading in a 91st minute winner for the Soweto giants.

Chiefs: Pieterse, Moleko, Gordinho, Xulu (Parker 63’), Masilela, Katsande, Baloyi, Tshabalala, Maluleka (Ekstein 55’), Lebese (Twala 43’), Abraw

Maritzburg: Verbauwhede, Mogapi, Mngonyama, Teyise, P. Zulu (Banda 90’), Booysen, Nene, M. Mekoa (Nale 71’), Lentjies, D. Mekoa, Rusike
