Maritzburg United secured a crucial three points with a hard-fought 1-0 win away to Bloemfontein Celtic at the Dr Molemela Stadium on Sunday.
Celtic had early chances - Lerato Lamola put Lakay in on goal, but Glenn Verbauwhede make a fantastic diving save.
He then kept out Fiston Razak’s headed effort on 11 minutes before Lamola blazed over the bar.
Evans Rusike’s 19th minute shot missed the far left hand post by inches after a storming run down the right flank before Team of Choice midfielder Deolin Mekoa cut inside the box before curling a left-footed effort just wide of the left hand upright on 35 minutes.
Moving into the second half, Lamola fired a 48th minute shot over the bar from only close range before he also went wide with a header.
Thamsanqa Teyise’s saw his overhead kick going over the bar 20 minutes from time. The Team of Choice scored on 73 minutes, Pagiso Sanoka getting up high to head home at the near post from a Kurt Lentjies free kick.
There were some nervous late moments for Maritzburg, including a goal-line clearance by Brian Onyango, but the visiting team were able to hold on for just their second win of the season, the result taking them to within a point of second-from-bottom AmaTuks.
