Maritzburg suffer last minute heartbreak to Bidvest Wits
24 February 2016
A 95th minute goal saw Bidvest Wits securing a 2-1 win over Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday night.
The manner in which United dominated the second half suggested that they would have been deserved winners, but luck proved to be cruel once more as the visitors walked off with all three points.
It had been the Students who started the game strongest, Daine Klate missing a couple of decent chances in the opening 15 minutes.
Kurt Lentjies enjoyed the Team of Choice’s first chance, but sent a powerful drive over the bar on 19 minutes.
Klate gave the visiting team the lead on 30 minutes when he headed in from an Elias Pelembe cross.
Maritzburg came storming back in the second half, Philani Zulu beating Nazeer Allie down the left flank before narrowly failing to put the ball in at the far post before Evans Rusike saw his header flashing marginally wide.
Gregory Maasdorp crossed for Rusike 65 minutes, the Zimbabwean looking set to score from eight yards out, but Allie intervened.
Lentjies missed with a back post header and then Brian Onyango’s a header wide from a 71st minute corner kick went wide.
Maritzburg were rewarded for their efforts in the 80th minute as Lentjies steered a cross into Maasdorp’s path, the newly-signed marksman beating Josephs from close range for his first PSL goal.
Zulu then sent a near post header just wide, before James Keene missed a sitter in front of an open goal.
But in the fifth minute of added time Keene converted a header in front of the stunned home support at the Harry Gwala Stadium.
