Team of Choice draw with Chilli Boys
20 March 2016
Maritzburg United were unable to turn one point into three as they had to settle for a 2-2 draw with Chippa United in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.
United scored after just six minutes, Philani Zulu running onto a great through ball from Kurt Lentjies down the left flank before slotting the ball across goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi and in at the far post.
But Maritzburg’s lead was only to last until the 12th minute, Andile Mbenyane making it 1-1 when he headed in from close range from Eric Chipeta’s free kick.
The Chilli Boys went in front for the first time when Joseph Molangoane beat Glenn Verbauwhede with a low shot from close range after Nkosinathi Mbiyane’s drive had taken a deflection off a defender.
But the game was once again back on level terms, in first half injury time. The goal was scored by Evans Rusike, the Zimbabwean finding the bottom right hand corner of the net with a sublime 20-yard shot after a mistake by James Okwuosa in the home defence.
The second half kept the fans on the edge of their seats - even if there were not as many goal-scoring chances as the opening stanza, the action remained end-to end with Chippa doing more of the pressing, while Maritzburg always looked a threat on the counter.
But chances were indeed rare, the Team of Choice limited to a long range effort by Brian Onyango on 64 minutes, while Andile Mbenyane scuffed two half-chances for Dan Malasela’s team.
Bandile Shandu had the ball in the net for the visiting team in added time, but his effort was ruled out due to the hand that was used to control the ball.
