Introducing: Denis 'Dunso' Weidlich
25 July 2016
At the recent press conference held by Maritzburg United, thirteen new players were revealed, one of them Denis Weidlich, a one-time Arsenal trialist signed from Holstein Kiel in Germany.
The man popularly known as 'Dunso' in Germany where he was born in 1986, went to Ghana for about three years, and then returned to Germany. He played professional football there before he went to England.
"I went to England to study, and I was scouted by Arsenal. I went to their academy for three or four months. I had trials there, but they sent me to Wimbledon, where I got a major injury, then I went back to Germany," the player explained.
Denis can play in the middle or at the back, "I can play defensive mid-field, centre back, even right back or left back. My game is to try to keep the goalkeeper safe, then try to play good football from the back, not kick and rush. Start playing good football from the back and make sure that we win,” he remarked.
When asked if he knew anything about Maritzburg United before joining, he responded, "When I was approached, I didn’t know the club, I went onto the internet and checked everything. I heard about the last season and that at the end, we made it and stayed in the league."
He continued, "I think this season we have a different target. We don’t just want to stay in the league, we’ll try and play good football and get points for our supporters.”
Denis is optimistic about what he has seen at training so far:
"Training is going very well. We are training very hard. We are progressing and it’s looking very good. The coach keeps telling us that even if we score one goal, it is important that we keep concentration for 90 minutes, until the referee blows the whistle," he emphasised.
And his message to the fans was simple - "Keep pushing, keep believing in us. In football there are good times and bad times. For us as players, it’s important that they are with us when things are not good,” he concluded.
