Mekoa features for SA in Brazil draw

5 August 2016

Maritzburg United winger Deolin Mekoa was part of the South Africa U23 side which held Brazil to a credible 0-0 draw in the opening match of the Olympic Games football tournament.

South Africa matched their illustrious opponents, who featured Barcelona star Neymar in their line-up, Owen Da Gama’s side having had several good chances to win the game.

Mekoa played the entire 90 minutes and put up a solid performance, his pace and running down the left flank always offering an outlet for South Africa’s attacks.

Mekoa has been at the Team of Choice for two seasons, scoring five goals in his 41 league matches for the PMB team.

The 22-year-old was originally spotted in the Caslt Lager Football Academy program headed by Neil Tovey.

Next up for South Africa are Denmark, whom they meet on Monday, followed by their final Group A match; against Iraq next Thursday.
