All systems go for United as Absa Prem kicks off this week
22 August 2016
Maritzburg United begin their 2016/ 17 Absa Premiership campaign when they clash with Bloemfontein Celtic at the Dr Molemela Stadium on Wednesday night.
The match kicks off at 19H30 and will be shown live on SuperSport 9.
Last season saw Maritzburg beating Celtic 1-0 away from home, while suffering a 2-0 defeat to Phunya Sele Sele at the Harry Gwala Stadium. In total, United have won 8 of 20 games against Celtic, with 3 defeats and 9 draws.
Having flirted with relegation last season, the Team of Choice will be determined to learn from their mistakes and start the campaign on a positive note.
Coach Ernst Middendorp and his technical team have also been hard at work boosting the squad, with the following new players signed during the off-season:
Siphesihle Ndlovu, Mondli Dlamini, Tsepeletso Motjatji, Bryce Moon, Andrea Fillecia, Themba Shabalala, Bevan Fransman, Denis Weidlich, Lebohang Mabe, Luyanda Ntshangase, Devon Saal, Bongani Mpandle and Blessing Moyo.
Maritzburg chairman Farook Kadodia has meanwhile stated that he does not expect the team to lose any of their appetite for attack this season and he is confident that the Team of Choice's loyal fan-base will further increase:
“The brand will continue because it is football entertainment that brings the fans to the stadium. We intend to produce a bouquet of entertainment to grow the crowd from the average figure of 6 000 that we had last season," he told the Star.
