United and Sundowns in entertaining stalemate
14 September 2016
It was a game which lacked only in goals as Maritzburg United and Mamelodi Sundowns drew 0-0 in front of a near-packed house at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday night.
The result sees United unbeaten after two matches and with four points on the board.
The match ebbed and flowed throughout an evening on which the crowd created an electric atmosphere.
After surviving Sundown’s bright start, Maritzburg United began to grow in stature as the likes of Philani Zulu, Evans Rusike, Kurt Lentjies and Deolin Mekoa got the Team of Choice buzzing.
After Yannick Zakri and Samuel Julies had chances for Downs, United seemed unluckly not to get a penalty when Deolin Mekoa went down in the penalty box under Themba Zwane's challenge.
Subisiso Vilakazi could have put the Brazilians ahead five minutes after the restart, but lobbed the ball wide of an empty net.
Brian Onyango then saw his header hitting the bar before Virgil Vries saved brilliantly from Vilakazi, diving low to his left in a fantasic reflex save.
United had some good chances late in the game, looking dangerous on their swift forays up-field, but Zulu squanderd the best chance when his shot from a tight angle was saved.
