Maritzburg 0-1 SuperSport
21 September 2016
Maritzburg United will count themselves unlucky at having taken nothing from their clash with SuperSport United at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday night, going down 1-0.
The KZN side were on top for good chunks of the game. But a combination of some outstanding goalkeeping by Ronwen Williams and some missed chances, together with some tight calls going against the hosts, saw SuperSport claiming all thee Absa Premiership points.
An action packed first half saw Aubrey Modiba almost scoring with an overhead kick before Jeremy Brockie fired straight at Team of Choice keeper Vigil Vries.
Vries also pulled off a great save to deny Reneilwe Letsholonyane, while at the other end of the field, Evans Rusike missed an excellent chance for United from close range in the 26th minute.
A superb through ball from Kurt Lentjies on 33 minutes released Abia Nale, but the former Chiefs attacker was denied by a breathtaking save by Ronwen Williams.
Deolin Mekoa went wide for Maritzburg and then Mario Booysen missed with a header against his former employers as the action continued.
SuperSport scored three minutes before the break when Thuso Phala tapped home from close range, after a swift counter from the visitors, the goal given despite a call for off-sides.
Maritzburg came out with bang after half time and Sheldon van Wyk fired just wider of goal before Denis Weidlich headed over from a corner.
Nale and then Blessing Moyo also had efforts on goals as United fought for an equaliser.
Maritzburg appeared unlucky not to get an 89th minute penalty when Rusike was brought down.
With that went the Team of Choice’s chances of salvaging something from a game which could well have ended in a different result.
