Kaizer Chiefs 2-0 Maritzburg United
24 September 2016
Some debatable match officiating did not help Maritzburg United’s cause in their 2-0 defeat to Chiefs at the FNB Stadium on Saturday evening.
United started brightly and enjoyed all the early running, Chiefs barely able to get on the ball.
Brian Onyango seemed to have out the Team of Choice ahead after 19 minutes, but was unfortunate to have his goal ruled out for no obvious reason.
Instead Chiefs took the ball, down the other end of the field and opened the scoring through Lorenzo Gordinho’s header.
Maritzburg had chance to get back into game with shots from Deolin Mekoa and then Philani Zulu, but Amakhosi keeper Itumeleng Khune made some excellent saves.
Chiefs were up 2-0 just before half time when Mitchell Katsvairo put William Twala through on goal, the latter picking out the bottom corner of the net and giving Virgil Vries no chance.
Khune continued to deny United after the break, making a sharp save to keep out Bevan Fransman’s 52nd minute header.
Kurt Lentjies then struck a 70th minute effort inches wide before Khune stopped a goal-bound header nine minutes from time from Fransman.
