Victory eludes gutsy United
28 October 2016
A ten-man Maritzburg United came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Golden Arrows at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night.
It turned out to be a thrilling KZN derby which on the balance of play Maritzburg should have claimed victory.
Despite their numerical disadvantage after the 49th minute sending off of Brian Onyango, United completely dominated the second half, showing huge amounts of energy and determination.
But it just would not fall for the Team of Choice as Arrows had to hang on doggedly for their point.
Arrows took the lead in the 18th minute when Kagiso Dikgacoi finished clinically after the ball was cut back from the byline.
Maritzburg when then disallowed a goal after Bevan Fransman had pulled the ball across the line for Evans Rusike to force in.
A mistake at the back from United gifted Musa Bilankulu Arrows’ second goal on 37 minutes.
Rusike gave United hope just before the break with a goal of the highest quality, controlling a long cross-field ball, holding off a defender before cutting inside and scoring with a net-busting shot from 25-yards out.
The pressure after half from Ernst Middendorp’s side was relentless, Onyango flashing a header wide before Devon Saal, who made a big impact off the bench, was denied by a great save by Maxmillian Mbaeva.
It was one-way traffic as United gave their all for the win and they were on level terms in the 72nd minute when Kurt Lentjies stole in at the far post to get on the end of Lebogang Maboe’s shot.
Maritzburg had several chances to win the game as they did everything possible to claim the three points.
But Mbaeva stopped a volley from Denis Weidlich as well as several other efforts as Clinton Larsen’s side hung on for the point to go top of the table.
