United unable to finish off Highlands Park
02 November 2016

Maritzburg United scored first but had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Highlands Park at the Harry
Gwala Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Team of Choice had the first chance, after 13 minutes, when Devon Saal fired just over the bar from outside the box.

Home keeper Bongani Mpandle then did superbly to stop Brandon Theron from scoring before Evans Rusike headed inches wide from Abia Nale’s 19th minute cross before Maritzburg’s Zimbabwean striker chipped an effort over goal with only Tapuwa Kapini to beat.

Saal gave United the lead three minutes after half time when he put the finishing touch on a well-worked move.

But the lead only lasted six minutes as Thanduyise Khuboni headed in for the Lions of the North.

Maritzburg were down to 10 men on 58 minutes after Bevan Fransman was red-carded.

United managed to keep the visitors at bay despite their numerical disadvantage to earn the point.
