Maritzburg deserved winners over Bucs
13 December 2016
Maritzburg United got their first home win of the season in fine style with a 2-1 victory over Orlando Pirates at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Tuesday night.
The victory takes United into the top eight with 17 points from 13 matches.
All three goals came in the second half, Bevan Fransman scoring on 48 minutes before Brian Onyango added a second 20 minutes later and then former Maritzburg striker Ayanda Nkosi pulled one back for the Soweto side seven minutes from time.
In front of a near-full house in PMB, Maritzburg appeared unlucky not to go ahead on 25 minutes when Mohau Mokate steered the ball in from close range only to have a marginal off-side decision go against him.
Pirates nearly scored at the other end when Happy Jele sent a header into the crossbar from Mpho Makola's corner-kick while Bongani Mpandle did well to tip Luvoyo Memela’a stinging drive over the bar.
Fransman put the Team of Choice in front just after the break when he guided the ball in from close range after Deolin Mekoa had pulled it back from the byline.
A Mekoa corner midway through the half resulted in another eruption from the crowd as Onyango got above Issa Sarr to power in a header.
Nkosi curled a 25-yard shot in clinically to give the Buccaneers hope, but Maritzburg could have added more goals if Mekoa had not hit the woodwork and Lebogang Maboe had taken his chance.
In the end through it was a deserved victory and a second consecutive win.
