Fortune eludes Maritzburg in KZN derby
4 March 2017
Maritzburg United dominated large periods of the game at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Saturday night, but went down 1-0 to Golden Arrows.
Maritzburg enjoyed more possession throughout the first half, but failed to find the spark needed up front to threaten the home defence.
Arrows scored with their only chance of the opening stanza when Knox Mutizwa sneaked in between the Team of Choice’s defence to head home a 42nd minute free kick.
United continue to control proceedings after half time but couldn’t find the equaliser as Bandile Shandu dragged a 20-yard effort wide before Evans Rusike had a shot blocked in the box.
Kwanda Mngomnyama then fired over the bar after a good build up by the PMB team, with Lerato Lamola lifting his shot over the bar in a rare chance for Arrows a few minutes later.
The Team of Choice continued to ask questions of the Abafana bes’Thende defence right up until the full time whistle, but it just wouldn’t fall for them in front of goal in what proved to be a frustrating evening for the visitors.
