Team of Choice hold off Ajax for a crucial win
1 April 2017

Maritzburg United returned to the winning trail with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ajax Cape Town at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday night.

Andrea Fileccia opened the scoring for the Team of Choice with his first goal for the club and Brian Onyango added a second, but a late goal from Rodrick Kabwe ensured a tense finish before United wrapped up the valuable three points with some determined defending.

Deolin Mekoa had an early chance for Maritzburg, but fired over the crossbar, before Denis Weidlich also missed the target.

Evans Rusike put an effort just wide for United and then Fileccia side-footed in clinically to give the Team of Choice a 37th minute lead.

The advantage was doubled with 65 minutes on the clock when defender Brian Onyango headed in from Mekoa’s corner.

Kabwe netted from an 83rd minute corner kick for the Urban Warriors.

United though nearly restored their two goal cushion when Kurt Lentjies was denied by Jody February late on, the KZN side in any case going on to claim maximum points.
