Maritzburg United \

Maritzburg United chairman Mr Farook Kadodia explains in detail the thought process and the events leading up to the appointment of Fadlu Davids as the Head Coach.

Good day to all members of the media. Two seasons ago, Maritzburg United celebrated finishing in the top eight in the Premier Soccer League for the first time. This was indeed a great achievement for a team that had been known to be relegation survivors year in and year out.

This achievement gave us the belief that we actually have the potential to compete and achieve success in the PSL. We had renewed determination to do even better the following season.

Unfortunately it was not to be, due to a disrupted pre-season when we parted ways with the then head coach, and for the entire season things just did not come together. We found ourselves with our backs on the wall as we had until the last game to fight for our lives. The last ten minutes great escape is history now. That was probably the most stressful experience I have ever had since my involvement in football.

We know that in this game, one also needs luck, and we do believe that we were not a bad team at all, but luck was just not on our side. When the last season started, we were determined not to see the repeat of that dreadful experience, but rather to bounce back to winning ways and once again achieve a top 8 finish. That was a clear mandate to the Head Coach and the Technical Team. To assist them to achieve that, we had to beef up the squad, especially in defence where we had identified our biggest weakness.

The players that we brought in delivered. We needed leaders at the back, and in Bevan Fransman and Denis Weidlich, that is exactly what we got. But also the youngsters that we brought in, jelled well with the senior players and produced good football.

But again unfortunately, we were not getting points. In ten games we had accumulated only ten points. The problems between our Head Coach and certain officials was not at all helping us. This led to the coach deciding to leave in November for the interest of the club. Assistant Coach Fadlu Davids was roped in to act as caretaker Coach whilst we were looking for a replacement. It was at that point that we began to get results.

But we had to be careful not to be carried away and throw our coach in the Lion’s den, we opted to bring in an experienced Coach to take us through the remainder of the season. That was when Roger De Sa came in. Unfortunately we found ourselves losing points again and obviously it became worrisome for us. Even so, we still hoped that things would be turned around, but the coach resigned, much to our surprise due to family matters at home.

It was very easy to decide who would take over for the rest of the season, and Fadlu Davids with his Technical staff waved the magic wand and delivered a historic seventh finish in the PSL, for which we were very grateful. I once again take this opportunity on behalf of the Directors, Management and the fans, to thank Fadlu and his Technical team for a job well done.

We are also happy that the investment that Msunduzi Municipality made, yielded the desirable outcomes, to see the club being competitive and attract fans to the stadium. The fact that we saw local youngsters claiming positions in the starting eleven, pointed to the fact that as a club, we are on track with our objective of providing a platform for talented local youngsters to realise their dreams of playing professional football.

A decision needed to be made as to who would be the Head Coach in the new season. This was influenced by several factors including:

(1) Developing and or continuing with an identity and style of play for Maritzburg United.
(2) Developing and roping in more youngsters into the senior team set up.

To achieve this, we needed to identify a Coach with fresh ideas and approach in the game. A Coach who would fully fit in with our development philosophy and a culture that we are working to create, which is to bring in results and play exciting football at the same time. We felt it was time to engage with the man who has proven his abilities beyond doubt in the two spells that he was in charge last season.

The mandate is very clear. We want to finish in the Top Five and play at least one cup final. We know we can achieve this, and we will provide every support to ensure that this is achieved. Our man is a legend of Maritzburg United, having played and still remains the top goal scorer for the club.

He has proven to be a workaholic, with very good work ethics, a true professional who has full control of the change room.
Ladies and gentlemen i announce the new Head Coach for Maritzburg United, Fadlu Davids.
