DAVIDS: UNITED DESERVED WINNERS IN THE CUP

Maritzburg United head coach Fadlu Davids says his players carried out instructions well against Mamelodi Sundowns and deserved the victory.

The Team of Choice beat the Brazilians 1-0 in an MTN8 quarter-final match in Attridgeville on Sunday to set up a semi-final showdown against SuperSport United.

Davids was pleased with the effort his charges put in and was happy to see them carrying out their instructions well.

"I think you have to give the players credit for the work they put in today. They stuck to the plan," said the former Maritzburg striker.

“It’s never easy playing against Sundowns, they push you back - you don't want to sit that deep but they push you back.

"They probed, they could have scored, to be fair; they could have scored one or two goals in the end or one goal just before half-time but I think credit to the [Maritzburg players], they deserve to go to the next round for all the work they put in, pre-season and today.

"The first half was really what we wanted - not allowing Sundowns to settle on the ball. We made it difficult for them, pushed them into areas we wanted to have them, it worked quite well.

"We still have a lot of stuff to work on, of course these chances we gave away in the end, but well done to the boys, they deserve it," he concluded.
