MARITZBURG TAKE ON DIKWENA IN LEAGUE OPENER

Maritzburg United square up to Platinum Stars in their opening Absa Premiership fixture of the season, away in Rustenburg on Sunday afternoon.

Kick off at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium is at 3pm.

The Team of Choice head into the game on the back of a 1-0 MTN8 win over Mamelodi Sundowns, but the trip to the North West will be a fresh challenge as United look to get points on the board in their league campaign.

There were no goals between Maritzburg and Stars last season following 0-0 home and away stalemates, while the season before that, the two sides drew both their league games 1-1.

One has to go back to March of 2015 for the last time there was a result in their head-to-head history; on that day the Team of Choice won 2-1 in Rustenburg.

Overall there have been 22 meetings, with Dikwena winning 10 to Maritzburg’s five, together with seven draws.

Team of Choice skipper Denis Weidlich spoke of the unity within the camp after the MTN8 win over Sundowns and United will be looking play with the same kind of intensity against a new-look Stars outfit.

"For this season we set so many targets so for us, it’s perfect, brilliant, to qualify for the next round.

"The coach [Fadlu Davids] taught us very well. We don’t have a star, the who team is a star so we all push into one direction.

"If we fail, we all fail. If we win, we all win, so I think that keeps us so strong, with the supporters behind our backs and with the belief that we can achieve, even though we are a [so-called] 'small' team," said Weidlich.
