TEAM OF CHOICE MAINTAIN PERFECT LEAGUE START

After Sunday's 2-0 win away to Platinum Stars, Evans Rusike fired Maritzburg to a 2-0 victory over Ajax Cape Town at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday.

United were in control for much of the evening and were served winners in their first home match of the new campaign.

Maritzburg started well and had the first chance, on five minutes, but after some excellent work by Evans Rusike, Lebohang Maboe shot just wide at the near post.

Siphesihle Ndlovu's low drive from 18-yards was saved by Brandon Petersen before Ajax had their first opportunity when Tashreeq Morris headed over on 15 minutes.

It was the Team of Choice though who were to draw first blood when Bandile Shandu's inviting 30th minute cross picked out Rusike, who rose well to head home emphatically.

Rusike had further chances to add to the score-line, but he fired wide on 40 minutes before a goal-bound header following a Fortune Makaringe cross was brilliantly saved by Petersen.

Ajax posed more of a threat after half time, and Team of Choice keeper Bongani Mpandle made a great save from a Thabo Mosadi shot to keep the lead intact.

A mistake in the Urban Warriors defence however allowed the razor sharp Rusike to grab United's second, the Zimbabwean running in on goal before lifting the ball beyond Petersen.

Makaringe was close to adding a third, but Petersen made a fine stop to deny him.

Maritzburg eased through to the finish line for a third win in all competitions under head coach Fadlu Davids this season and now top the Absa Premiership table after two rounds.
