Sunday is a potential chance to start your journey to becoming a professional player as Maritzburg United hold trials for players born in 1997, or younger.

The Team of Choice are looking to bolster their MDC and SAB League teams and as such are scouting for players under 20 players and born no later than 1997 (16,17,18 & 19 years old).

This is in line with the KwaZulu-Natal capital club’s policy of providing opportunities to the abundance of talented young footballers within the region.

Now established as first team regulars and seen as some of the PSL’s most exciting young talents, the KZN-born pair of Bandile Shandu and Siphesihle Ndlovu (pictured above) started their own journeys in Marizburg’s development arm before taking their first team chances with aplomb.

“I was with Maritzburg through the development ranks and then made it into the MultiChoice Diski Challenge side,” Shandu explained.

“It’s a great platform. If you go out and give it your all you can get selected. It’s one step closer to playing in the PSL.

“Just to be part of training every day, working on the fundamentals every day, being coached by great coaches, growing as person and as a footballer,” added the 22-year-old, who made his top-flight debut as a teenager in the 2012/ 13 campaign.

Ndlovu, still only 20, made his breakthrough into the first team last season and set the scene alight with some riveting displays from wide positions in midfield. For the player known as ‘Mbesuma’, the key factor for success was dedication.

“It takes a lot, you have to compete hard because there are a lot of other players also trying to make it, so you have to grind out your best performance,” he said of the trial scenario.

“Trialists should come with the mentality of working hard. You can’t come with talent only, you have to come there wanting it more than the others, you must have the hunger and desire to fight for what you want.

“It takes a lot to be a professional soccer player. You have to look after yourself, you have to have minimum friends and make sure you live the right way. But it’s good because it helps keep you away from bad influences,” he added.

The trials will be held at the AB Jackson Sports Field (across the Harry Gwala Stadium) on the 3rd of September 2017 starting at 09:00.
