MDLULI GUNNING FOR ANOTHER STRONG MDC CAMPAIGN

The Multichoice Diski Challenge (MDC/ Reserve League) has proven to be a very successful way of priming future first team players for Maritzburg United.

The Team of Choice excelled in the competition last season, finishing in a credible fifth position, only six points behind champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

The likes of Bandile Shandu, Siphesihle Ndlovu and Lebohang Maboe are just some of the now first team regulars who have benefitted from participating in the MDC league, and head coach Siya Mdluli is eager to continue the production line when the new season kicks in this weekend - the Team of Choice take on Free State Stars at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Sunday 10 September (10am).

"I played at the club as a player, I started coaching there, so it has been great to return," said Mdluli, who returned to the club last season after a period spent coaching in the NFD.

"We are looking forward to a new season," he continued. "We have a lot of new young players coming in so it will be a challenge, but we will take it one game at a time.

"Each and every coach when you go for a competition, you want to win it, but as I said we'll take it one game at a time and see how far we go," he added.

Although there is no real pressure to get results, Mdluli is keen to continue United's upward trend in the Reserve League, while the ultimate goal remains to produce first team players.

"The first season in MDC we didn't do so well, but the second and third seasons we finished in the top five. Third season we also did well, finishing fifth. So you can see we are moving forward and this season we will try for position two, if possible win it, but we don't want to put ourselves under too much pressure.

“Give these young players a chance, look after them, give them support, and then you will see young development players in the MDC, and making it through to the first team. We have got six or seven [former MDC] players in the first team currently in the starting line-up.”
