CUP DREAM ENDS FOR MARITZBURG

SuperSport United put paid to Maritzburg’s hopes of appearing in the MTN8 final after a 2-0 win at the Harry Gwala
Stadium gave the Pretoria side a 3-1 aggregate victory.

Jeremy Brockie put Matsatsantsa ahead at a packed Harry Gwala Stadium in the 13th minute when he headed past Bongani Mpandle.

The Team of Choice were to dish up some scintillating football as they tried to find an equaliser, but they were frustrated by a solid visiting defence.

Maritzburg though could well have been awarded a 17th minute penalty when Morgan Gould’s pull on Evans Rusike stopped him from scoring from Bandile Shandu’s inviting cross.

Brockie then fired a volley over the bar before Thuso Phala’s cross went close from 25-yards.

Matsatsantsa doubled their lead in the 44th minute when Grant Kekana crossed for Tebogo Mokoena at the back post, who put the ball across goal for Brockie to nod in.

Fadlu Davids’ side came out all guns blazing after the break, but despite putting the Tshwane side under increases pressure, they could not find the breakthrough. .

Andrea Fillecia was close on two occasions although he turned out to be off-sides both times, while SuperSport keeper Ronwen Williams made some good saves.

The Team of Choice ended with 10 men after debutant Timothy Atouba received a second yellow card in the 77th minute.

With their exciting cup run now ended, United will prepare for Tuesday’s KZN league derby with AmaZulu.
