MARITZBURG, USUTHU PLAY TO DERBY DRAW

Two late goals in Umlazi meant the KZN leaguederby between hosts AmaZulu and Maritzburg United ended all square at 1-1.

The result was enough to see Maritzburg keeping their spot at the top of the Absa Premiership standings.

There was little goalmouth action in a tightly-contested first half at the King Zwelithini Stadium.

The best opportunity in that period fell to Team of Choice defender Siyanda Xulu, but after a Deolin Mekoa cross, AmaZulu keeper Boafela Pule did well to keep out Xulu’s header.

At the other end, Maritzburg keeper Richard Ofori was able to keep out a Mabhuti Khenyeza effort.

United upped the ante after the restart and had their reward in the 79th minute, after Sheldon van Wyk’s cross was turned into his own net by former Maritzburg midfielder Michael Morton.

But the PMB side were denied a third successive league win of the campaign when Mhlengi Cele nodded in Lungelo Dlamini’s cross.

United will now turn their attention to Friday night’s home clash against Orlando Pirates.

AmaZulu starting Xl: Pule, Mtshweni, Sikhakhane, Nyongo, Morton, Darpoh, Mbatha, Karuru, Nomvethe, Manzini, Khenyeza

Maritzburg United starting Xl: Ofori, Fransman, Sanoka, Xulu, Weidlich, Makaringe, Rusike, Maboe, Mekoa, Mokate, Ndlovu
