FADLU LOOKING TO STAY AHEAD TACTICALLY

With opposition PSL teams looking to try and nullify Maritzburg United's lightening-quick attack, head coach
Fadlu Davids is working hard to stay a step ahead of the opposition.

The Team of Choice tactician has noticed that some of United’s opposition teams this season have loaded their defence with an extra player, and he plans to be ready for a similar scenario when Orlando Pirates visit the Harry Gwala Stadium cauldron for an Absa
Premiership encounter on Friday night (8pm kick off).

“I think that tactically teams are doing their homework on Maritzburg,” coach Fadlu explained. “We’ve played three games now (in the Absa Premiership) and two teams have changed to a five defence line. Ajax changed the Ajax philosophy to change to a five defence line, AmaZulu changed to a five defence line.

“Pirates might do the same – they’ve got fantastic, dynamic wing-backs in Thabo Matlaba and Innocent Maela. I will be prepared for both possibilities (a four/ five man defence), but I expect them to go with five.”

With the KZN capital club playing three big games in the space of only six days, coach Fadlu and the boys will will have their work cut out to try and ensure we are able to continue implementing our high intensity approach. Our coach will be looking to make full use of the squad to achieve this.

“I might have to make eight, nine changes against Pirates to refresh the squad. Because we had three games in six days before the FIFA break, and now we have three games in six days again.

“We can’t play with the same team, we have got fantastic boys in the Diski Challenge, I saw them play on the weekend, and we’ll be looking to make some changes for sure.”

Both teams have made a positive start to the season and occupy position one and two on the standings after two wins and a draw each. But Davids is not reading too much into the numbers and wants to make sure his men do not rest on their laurels.

“It’s going to be an end-to-end open game. They don’t defend, we don’t defend. It’s going to be a high intensity encounter.

“We had a good home win against Ajax, and yes we have seven points. But the Pirates game is a new match, we have to reset and refocus – form and home record doesn’t matter, we have to be up for the game.”

In closing, coach Fadlu also showed his appreciation for the Team of Choice’s amazing support base, and hopes to see a lot of support for the team in blue on Friday.

“We have some of the best fans in the country. We cannot emphasise enough just how much we appreciate you, and how important you are for the team, so we hope to see you guys far outnumbering the Pirates supporters on Friday and we’ll do everything we can to send you home smiling!” he concluded.
