PREVIEW: MARITZBURG V PIRATES

It will be two on-form teams that go head-to-head in what should be a riveting Absa Premiership encounter
at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night (8pm).

Maritzburg go into the game sitting top of the standings after three rounds, with Bucs behind us only on goal difference.

The Team of Choice’s most recent action resulted in a point earned after a 1-1 derby draw with AmaZulu on Tuesday, while the Sea Robbers beat Ajax Cape Town 1-0.

This fixture traditionally provides plenty of fireworks, and goals, of which there have been 15 in the last six matches.

Last season brought wins for both clubs at home; 2-1 for United in Pietermaritzburg, and 2-0 for Pirates in Orlando, while the season before provided a 3-3 at the Harry Gwala Stadium and a 0-0 in Soweto.

Overall, the sides have met on 23 occasions, with Maritzburg winning six, Bucs 13, and four draws.

Maritzburg midfielder Lebohang Maboe, who has scored twice this season (league and cup), is hoping provide the inspiration for a Team of Choice victory in front of the team’s loyal home fans.

“My goal is to make sure I make the team tick. But on top of that‚ scoring is one of the main tasks I’ve committed myself to this season. I’m eager to score more than I did last season,” he was quoted saying by the Sowetan.

“Our main aim this season is to win all our home matches no matter who we are up against. We know that Pirates is a big team but we’ll leave that outside the field‚” he added.
