MARITZBURG TO RECHARGE AHEAD OF STARS CLASH

With a bit of a breather before their next match, Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids has welcomed the respite to a
busy fixture schedule as a chance to 'deflate the balloon and start again'.

The Team of Choice have just played both the Soweto giants at the Harry Gwala Stadium in the space of four days, those games coming hot on the heels of a KZN derby versus AmaZulu and an MTN8 semi-final against SuperSport United.

After taking a point from a resurgent Pirates side in a 0-0 draw, Maritzburg went down 0-2 to Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday in front of a packed house in Pietermaritzburg.

The score-line against Amakhosi though was not an accurate reflection of a game in which the Team of Choice had the bulk of the scoring chances, but found themselves shut out by a brilliant display from Man-of-the-Match Itumeleng Khune.

Maritzburg lit up the evening with some passages of exhilarating football, but it just didn’t fall for them in front of goal.

“I’m extremely happy with the effort, but really disappointed with the result,” was coach Fadlu’s summation of the match.

“Kaizer Chiefs had two moments and credit to them, they scored with those two moments. We had numerous opportunities to score and we didn’t, I think the best team lost,” he added.

While pleased that his side are able to create opportunities, coach Fadlu will be looking to use the time off before our next game (Free State Stars at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday 29 September) to fine-tune Maritzburg’s play in the opposition third of the field.

“The good thing is we are creating, we’re getting into those positions, we are unlocking defences, whether they play a four or a five defence line, we are still unlocking them with our movements and our running patterns. It’s the final decision making, the final action that we have to work on,” he said.

With the buzz around the team this season and the unavoidable hype surrounding the matches against SuperSport in the Cup and against South Africa’s two biggest clubs, Pirates and Chiefs in the league, Fadlu is looking forward to the chance to get his men fresh and refocused.

“I’m happy these games are done and we can move forward and come back down to earth. Everyone is talking about Maritzburg, praising them wherever they go, now it’s a moment where you have to reflect, work harder, improve in certain areas. Deflate the balloon and start again.”
