Overall it was a fast-paced and at times scrappy encounter at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night which saw the Team of Choice with the more frequent chances on goal, but just not able to capitalise on a couple of good chances.
Platinum Stars had an early chance when Vuyo Mere sent an overhead kick just wide of the goal.
But Maritzburg were to dominate the remainder of the first half and could have scored seven minutes before the break when some lovely interplay ended with Devon Saal playing in Evans Rusike, but he slashed his shot wide of the target.
Rusike was again close to getting on the score-sheet seconds before half time as he just failed to get on the end of a through ball.
Lebohang Maboe was then denied by a fine save by Dikwena keeper Dino Visser just after the restart as the home side continued to ask questions.
Stars also had some opportunities as Robert Ng’ambi twice went close before Maritzburg had a goal from Mxolisi Kunene ruled out for off-sides with three minutes to play.
United nearly grabbed the winner in the final seconds of regulation time, but somehow a Dikwena defender was able to block out Mohau Mokate’s header.
Maritzburg arguably looked the more likely side to score in extra time, although in the end neither team really came close to breaking the deadlock.
The tie went to penalties and it was to be Stars keeper Dino Visser’s night as he made two saves to win the match for the North West province club.
