GOALS A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY - FADLU

Maritzburg United head coach Fadlu Davids has emphasized the importance of the whole team taking on the goal-scoring responsibilities.

While the Team of Choice have the best defensive record in the league and have shown themselves to be an excellent footballing side, goal-scoring has been their Achilles heel in the last couple of months.

It’s the strikers and attacking midfielders who by position are expected to be scoring goals and it’s those players who are often the first to be criticised when the goals are not arriving.

But Davids feels it would be counterproductive to single out individuals and has challenged the entire team to take a positive approach in order to find a solution to the problem at hand.

“We can’t rely on Evans Rusike for all our goals,” Fadlu said after Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Bidvest Wits at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

“We take credit as a team for having the best defensive record in the league, and we have to take not-scoring-goals also as a team – not only the strikers.

“We have to talk about our attacking guys, our midfielders, even defenders at set pieces. As a team we must take responsibility and we won’t put it on our striker’s shoulders.

“Each and every player must go onto the field say ‘I’m scoring today, or at least I’m assisting today’. With that mind-set, goal orientated, you can get the end result,” he added.

The coach was meanwhile upbeat over Cameroon playmaker Yazid Atouba’s progress and expects him to become increasingly influential in the final third of the field.

“A positive sign was the attacking of Yazid Atouba, he gave a really positive performance. It’s difficult coming from outside of the country, we put a lot on his shoulders.

“I’m really happy and he can only go from strength to strength as he gets used to the new environment – the pace and intensity of the league. The PSL can be surprisingly fast for players coming from outside.”

Maritzburg are next in action when they take on Cape Town City next Wednesday in an Absa Premiership match that was moved from the Athlone Stadium to the Princes Magogo Stadium.
