MARITZBURG EDGED OUT BY SUNDOWNS

Maritzburg United made Mamelodi Sundowns sweat for their 1-0 Absa Premiership victory at the
Loftus Stadium on Wednesday night.

The only goal of a tight game was scored by Bafana Bafana striker Percy Tau just after the hour mark, with United having a goal ruled out five minutes before the end.

The opening stages were tight as the Team of Choice employed a high pressing game to keep the home side from posing any threat up front.

Fadlu Davids’ team were able to create a few chances of their own as Lebogang Maboe fired a dangerous ball across goal before he drew a great save from Denis Onyango with a stinging shot from a tight angle on 11 minutes.

At the other end Themba Zwane headed wide before Sibusiso Vilakazi had a shot blocked before Masandawana skipper Hlompho Kekana had his 20-yard shot comfortably saved by Richard Ofori while a header was well off the mark.

Onyango was worked before and after the break, keeping out a Fortune Makaringe shot and also taking the ball off the feet of Evans Rusike five minutes after half time.

Sundowns scored when Tau smashed in a low shot after Kekana had picked him out with an excellent through ball.

Maritzburg defender Pogiso Sanoka was close with a chipped effort 20 minutes from time and he also had a goal disallowed in the 85th minute.

The Team of Choice pushed hard for an equaliser but some committed defending from Sundowns saw them closing out the match.
