FADLU FINDS POSITIVES IN 'DOWNS DEFEAT

Maritzburg United head coach Fadlu Davids says he could find little fault with his side's efforts in their 0-1
defeat to Absa Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday night.

The Team of Choice pushed the 2016 African champions all the way and could well have grabbed a point, but in the end Bafana Bafana striker Percy Tau’s goal just after the hour mark settled the result.

“I can’t fault the players, absolutely fantastic from their side with the performance,” Fadlu said after the match in Tshwane.

“Yes we can do better in certain moments in terms of our pressing structures, especially when we are pressing them high up the pitch. We can do better in not allowing them to recycle. I said it before, they (Sundowns) needed one moment to score, and they definitely took it.

“We had opportunities to score, Evans [Rusike], in the one-on-one (with Sundowns keeper Denis Onyango), that’s where our pressing structures were good. But the players stuck to the task, they fought right until the end, they pushed Sundowns back in the end and I’m so proud of them,” the Maritzburg mentor concluded.

Team of Choice central defender Siyanda Xulu was also able to take some positives from the match at Loftus.

“You know how Sundowns play, they play tiki-taka and look for a space behind you. We came here prepared, but unfortunately we conceded the one goal.

“We also had chances, we should have grabbed one, but Denis is a good goalkeeper, he had a good day at the office. We’re a young team, we try to catch teams on the counter because we play with a lot of speed. We always knew it wasn’t going to be an easy game,” Xulu said.

United now turn their attention to their final match of 2017, the eagerly anticipated KZN derby against Golden Arrows at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Sunday.
