MARITZBURG EDGED OUT BY SUPERSPORT

M
aritzburg United battled to break down a stubborn SuperSport United defence in a 0-1 Absa Premiership
defeat at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday night.

The only goal of an evenly contested match came 12 minutes from time by Aubrey Modiba as Maritzburg’s two-match winning streak ended.

The visitors had the first chance of the game when Maritzburg keeper Richard Ofori tipped a Thabo Mnyamane cross over the bar after five minutes.

The Team of Choice’s best moment came on 30 minutes after Deolin Mekoa cut in from the left hand side of the box and fired just over the bar.

Matsatsantsa's were close to scoring in the 44th minute when Thuso Phala released Modiba, but he dragged the shot wide.

Maritzburg came out with more intensity after half time and had a chance when after a brilliant build-up, Siphesihle Ndlovu played in Mekoa, but SuperSport midfielder Sipho Mbule did superbly to make the block.

There was another opportunity for the Team of Choice 15 minutes from time when Evans Rusike headed goalwards, but visiting keeper Reyaad Pieterse made a diving save to pluck the ball out of the air.

Instead it was the Pretoria team who equalised soon after when Kingston Nkhatha flicked on a cross for Modiba to finish from close range.

Maritzburg fought back and had a penalty appeal turned down in the 85th minute after substitute Yazid Atouba's shot struck Morgan Gould on the arm in the SuperSport box before Fortune Makaringe miscued a shot.

The KZN side continued to search for an equaliser but Matsatsantsa held on doggedly for the win.
