TRAINING TO WIN – ONYANGO

Maritzburg United central defender Brian Onyango says the goal for Saturday night’s clash against Orlando Pirates is very much to claim maximum points.

The Team of Choice go into Saturday night’s showdown in Orlando just two points behind Pirates, who are third on the table.

“So far we have trained well this week and we are training for the win,” Onyango revealed. “This season we have been good on the road, getting points away from home. We’ll certainly be giving it our best shot and it will be up to the man above to decide.

“Pirates are one of the biggest teams in Africa, so that’s motivation enough for us as players. It’s also motivating for us that Pirates are above us on the table, so of course you want to give extra. But as a soccer player, your mentality must be to give extra each and every game,” he added.

Together with Kaizer Chiefs, Maritzburg have the best defence in the league with only 11 conceded in 19 games. Commenting on the contribution of new arrival, former Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns defender Siyanda Xulu, Onyango said:

“This club is a club that makes good signings. The Siyanda Xulu signing has been good for team and good for us as players, because we have learnt some things from him. He has played for big clubs and he has brought his experience here.

“To fight for your position is normal in football, no-one can just hand you your position, so you have to work hard for it and competition is good,” the Kenyan international continued. “Whoever starts has been pushing hard to do their best, and the communication has also been very good.

“There is competition, so you know that when you get your chance you have to work hard to make sure we keep our good record, you can’t let the team down. So the combination and the communication and the love amongst us defenders is excellent.”

Onyango believes that head coach Fadlu Davids is getting the best out of the United squad, though he says there’s no time to sit back and rest on current achievements.

“Even though we did well last season, we want to make sure that we improve on it this season. But there is still a way to go until the end of the season and so we can’t get carried away by what we have done so far, we have to keep on working hard and go for more,” said the tough-tackling centre-back.

“Coach Fadlu is a top coach, any player will want to be coached under him. In player management, in training sessions, the coach and our technical team are always on top of things. So for him to get the results he is getting, it’s not by fluke or by luck. He treats everyone the same and has no favourites.”
