FILECCIA DELIGHTED TO BE BACK ON THE PARK

Belgium-born striker Andrea Fileccia is looking poised answer the call up front and bang in the goals for Maritzburg United.

Fileccia struck a vital brace in Saturday’s Nedbank Cup win over Swallows FC and has netted four goals in his last six appearances as his full come-back from a long-term injury seems to be gaining in momentum.

“The coach (Fadlu Davids) has been giving me game-time which has been great for me, because when you don’t play for such a long time, its not easy, you just want to be on the field,” said the 26-year-old.

“I’m feeling stronger and the confidence is coming back. For strikers it’s especially important to have that confidence. It’s my job to score goals, so I need to be at my best and on top of my game.”

Despite the impact he’s made in recent weeks, Fileccia feels there’s still far more to come.

“With more game-time, I’ll soon be 100 percent fit. I still feel like I’m at 70, 75 percent fitness,” he explained. “This was (the Swallows match) only my third game that I started. The last time I played three, four games in a row, it was three years ago, with Free State Stars.

“So it takes time for the body to adapt to playing full matches again, there’s a very big difference between playing 15, 20 minutes, and 90, 95 minutes. It’s important to manage your body. Even playing a friendly game is not the same, its completely different to playing on a Saturday night in the stadium with all the supporters, the intensity of the game then is much higher.”

Reflecting on the season to date, Fileccia is optimistic that the Team of Choice can still achieve their objectives for the season.

“Yes I think we’re doing well. We are on track to finish in the top eight, the top seven, or higher. We also want to reach a cup final, and with the win over Swallows, we are still on track; a long way to go, but who knows with a bit of luck.”

With the Bergen-born marksman seemingly getting back to the sparkling form which made him such an exciting player to watch at Free State Stars, it could well be a thrilling end to the season for Maritzburg as they try and improve on last season’s seven-placed finish while also giving the Nedbank Cup their best shot.
