MEKOA: EXPECT DERBY FIREWORKS ON FRIDAY

Maritzburg United midfielder Deolin Mekoa is forecasting a thunderous KwaZulu-Natal derby against Durban
rivals AmaZulu at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night.

The Absa Premiership match kicks off at 8pm in the KZN Capital.

The Team of Choice head into the game in sixth spot with 28 points, just two points above AmaZulu in eighth.

Mekoa says the Maritzburg players are determined to set the record straight after Usuthu frustrated them in the first round encounter down on the coast.

"We've got players coming back from suspension and we're playing at home at the Harry Gwala Stadium, so it's going be a good night of football," said Mekoa

"It's gonna be fireworks, I remember we drew with them in the first round, we were leading and in the last minute of the game they scored. So now we just want to win and kill it off here in Maritzburg.

"If they win they jump places, if we win we also jump places, that adds more spice. I watched some of their matches and they are doing well at the moment, so it's going to be a good game I can't wait.”

Mekoa is however mindful of AmaZulu's good recent form.

"The way AmaZulu they've been playing they've got a good balance - they've got youngsters and experienced players - I think the experienced guys are mostly pulling the strings. You see Nomvethe and them are scoring crucial goals so yeah I think they are a good team."

United's skilful left-footer, who scored last time Maritzburg beat AmaZulu, accepts that the derby factor will be a crucial element, but he's also looking at the bigger picture.

"We are going for a win and we don't care what they call it, I know it's a derby, I know about the bragging rights, but we just want to get the three points and keep on going and pushing forwards. I know it's possible we can get into the top three, top four - it would be a good achievement for us guys as a team."

In closing, Mekoa wanted to point out how important the Maritzburg supporters are to the players.

"The derby is a chance to repay them. They've been supporting us through thick and thin. They were there for us when we had a bad run a couple of seasons back - they were there and they filled up the stadiums, our 12th man.

"So I would like them to come in numbers on Friday for the derby - it's gonna be fireworks. And thanks for giving the team all the support, even when we are travelling away, they there to support the guys, we really appreciate it, thank you.
